Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in the construction and manufacturing industries from the 1950s to the 1990s. It was popular due to its heat-resistant and fire-retardant properties, as well as its strength and durability. Asbestos was commonly used in insulation, roofing, tiles, flooring, pipes, and other building materials.

However, asbestos is also a highly toxic substance that can cause serious health problems if it is inhaled or ingested. The microscopic fibers of asbestos can become lodged in the lungs or other organs, leading to the development of mesothelioma (a cancer of the lining of the lungs), lung cancer, asbestosis (a chronic lung condition), and other respiratory illnesses. These diseases can take years or even decades to manifest, and there is no known cure.

Asbestos is most dangerous when it is disturbed or damaged, as this can release the fibers into the air. This can happen during renovations, demolition, or even routine maintenance. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that any asbestos-containing material (ACM) that is in good condition and not likely to be disturbed should be left in place and monitored. However, if the ACM is damaged, deteriorating, or poses a risk to health, it should be safely removed by licensed asbestos removal contractors.
