Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that was commonly used in building materials decades ago. It has been found to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma (cancer in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity), and asbestosis (a serious lung disease).

Asbestos-containing material (ACM) is harmless when its in good condition and left undisturbed. However, when its broken or deteriorating, the fibers can become airborne, and when inhaled, they can pose a significant health threat.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), asbestos-related diseases cause over 2,500 deaths every year in the UK. Asbestos is still present in many buildings that were built before the year 2000, especially in Littledown, where a lot of older buildings still exist.
