Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral material that was extensively used in the construction industry in the past. Although its use has been banned in the UK since 1999, asbestos-containing materials can still be found in many older buildings, especially those built before the 1980s.

Asbestos was popular in building materials because it was resistant to heat, fire, and chemicals. Some common asbestos-containing materials include:

• Thermal Insulation (found in boilers, pipes, and ductwork)
• Asbestos panels/boards (found in ceilings, walls, roofing)
• Asbestos floor tiles (found in old homes and schools)
• Asbestos cement (found in garages, sheds, and roofing)

However, asbestos becomes dangerous when it wears, breaks, or begins to decompose. This can release tiny and harmful asbestos fibers into the air that can be inhaled or ingested by people, causing damage to the lungs, the chest lining, and other organs.
