Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals that exist in fibrous form. The materials unique properties made it ideal for use in construction materials, such as roofing, insulation, flooring, and cement. However, researchers have found that prolonged exposure to asbestos can cause severe illness, including mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, chest, or abdomen. It is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos.

Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to several illnesses, including lung cancer and asbestosis. Asbestosis is a scarring of the lungs which can cause coughing, chest pain, and shortness of breath. The development of these illnesses is strongly linked to the amount of asbestos to which an individual has been exposed as well as the duration of exposure. However, even brief exposure to asbestos can be dangerous.

Asbestos is most harmful when it is disturbed or damaged. When asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are damaged, the fibers can be released into the air, creating a dangerous and invisible hazard. For this reason, the UK government requires that all asbestos works be carried out by licensed asbestos removal specialists.
