Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in construction and other industries for its heat-resistance, fireproofing, and insulation properties. However, it's now known to be a hazard to human health, as inhaling its fibers can lead to deadly diseases.

There are six types of asbestos, but the most commonly used are:

• Chrysotile: Also known as white asbestos, this type of asbestos was used in a wide range of insulation products, including ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, and roofing materials.
• Amosite: Also known as brown asbestos, this type of asbestos was commonly used in insulation boards, cement sheets, and pipe insulation.
• Crocidolite: Also known as blue asbestos, this type of asbestos was mainly used in marine and industrial applications, such as shipbuilding, steam engines, and boilers.

Asbestos-containing materials can be found in many areas of your property, including:

• Roofing tiles and shingles
• Siding and cladding
• Insulation around pipes, boilers, and ducts
• Floor and ceiling tiles
• Textured paints and coatings
• Electrical wiring insulation
• Fireproofing materials

Even if you don't see any visible signs of asbestos, it's possible that it's present in your property. Asbestos was widely used until the 1980s, and even some newer buildings may contain asbestos in certain materials.
