Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals that consist of long and thin fibers. These fibers are incredibly durable, resistant to heat and chemicals, and don't conduct electricity. Due to these properties, asbestos has been widely used in a variety of industries, including construction, shipbuilding, and firefighting, among others.

Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were commonly used in buildings constructed before the 1990s. ACMs could be present in insulation, roofing, flooring, cement, pipes, and other materials.

When ACMs are intact and undisturbed, they pose little to no harm. However, when these materials are disturbed, such as during renovations or demolition, they release asbestos fibers into the air, which can be inhaled and cause serious health issues.
