In May 2012, new regulations were introduced for handling asbestos materials which had been incorporated into legislation under The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. Asbestos containing materials (ACMs), were governed by the previous regulations for asbestos removal and disposal, but now the new guidelines also govern asbestos containing materials that were previously considered 'low risk' such as textured coatings and asbestos cement products.

Under the new regulations, the removal, handling and disposal of asbestos-containing products must be carried out by licensed professionals who are extensively trained and follow approved guidelines.
