Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in the construction industry from the 1950s until the 1990s. It was popular due to its heat resistance and insulating properties but was later found to be a serious health hazard. When asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, they release microscopic fibers into the air. Once inhaled, these fibers can cause serious lung diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
