Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that can be found in various building materials such as roofing, flooring, and insulation. It was widely used in the construction industry in the UK until it was banned in 1999 due to health risks associated with exposure to asbestos fibers.

Asbestos fibers, when inhaled, can cause serious health problems such as lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) that are in good condition and left undisturbed are unlikely to pose a risk but when they're disturbed, the fibers can be released into the air.
