The survey aims to identify the location, type, and extent of ACMs within a property. There are two main types of asbestos survey: management survey and refurbishment/demolition survey.

A management survey is a standard survey that aims to identify the presence and condition of ACMs that are likely to be disturbed during normal occupancy and maintenance of a building. The survey is necessary to comply with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012), which places a legal duty on property owners to manage the risks associated with asbestos in their buildings.

A refurbishment/demolition survey is a more intrusive survey that aims to identify all ACMs within a building that may be disturbed during refurbishment or demolition works. The survey is necessary to comply with CAR 2012 and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015), which require property owners and contractors to identify and manage asbestos risks during refurbishment or demolition works.
