The survey usually involves taking samples of suspected asbestos-containing materials and analyzing them under a microscope to determine the type and quantity of asbestos present.

There are two main types of asbestos surveys: management surveys and refurbishment/demolition surveys.

Management surveys are conducted to identify any asbestos-containing materials that may potentially be disturbed during normal occupancy of a building, such as maintenance or minor refurbishment work. Refurbishment/demolition surveys, on the other hand, are carried out when a building is due to be refurbished or demolished. This survey is more intrusive and destructive as it involves accessing areas that may not be easily accessible.
