An asbestos survey is an inspection of a building or structure to determine the presence or likelihood of asbestos-containing materials. The survey involves taking samples of any suspect materials and analyzing them to confirm if they contain asbestos or not.

There are two types of asbestos surveys - Management and Refurbishment/Demolition surveys.

A Management Survey is the standard survey recommended by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for identifying the presence of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in a building or structure. This type of survey is required by law under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. Its purpose is to locate, as far as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect ACMs in the building or structure that could be damaged or disturbed during normal occupancy, including foreseeable maintenance and installation, and to assess their condition.

A Refurbishment/Demolition Survey is required when the building (or part of it) is to be upgraded, refurbished or demolished. The survey is used to locate and identify all ACMs in the area where the refurbishment work will take place or in the whole building if it will be demolished.
