An asbestos survey is a systematic inspection of a building to identify the presence, location, and condition of ACMs. The survey is necessary to comply with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and ensure the safety of people who may be exposed to asbestos fibres. There are two types of asbestos survey: management surveys and refurbishment/demolition surveys.

A management survey is the standard survey that is required for all non-domestic buildings built before 2000. The purpose is to locate, as far as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any ACMs in the building that could be damaged or disturbed during normal occupancy, including foreseeable maintenance, and to assess their condition.

A refurbishment/demolition survey is required when a building is due to be refurbished, or demolished. The purpose of this survey is to locate, as far as reasonably practicable, all ACMs in the area where the refurbishment work will take place or the whole building, prior to demolition. This type of survey is more intrusive and involves destructive inspection techniques to access areas that may be difficult to reach.
