An asbestos survey is an inspection of a building or structure to determine whether there are any asbestos-containing materials present. These materials can be found in a variety of places, such as insulation, ceiling tiles, and floor tiles. If the asbestos-containing materials are in good condition and not likely to be disturbed, they can be left in place and managed. However, if they are in poor condition or likely to be disturbed, they will need to be removed.

There are two types of asbestos surveys: management surveys and refurbishment/demolition surveys. A management survey is the standard asbestos survey and is required for all non-domestic properties. Its purpose is to locate, assess, and manage ACMs during normal occupancy and use of the building. A refurbishment/demolition survey is necessary before any refurbishment or demolition work takes place. Its purpose is to identify and quantify any asbestos-containing materials that may be damaged or disturbed during the work.
