An asbestos survey is a systematic inspection of a building or structure to identify whether asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are present. It involves collecting representative samples of materials suspected of containing asbestos and analyzing them in a laboratory. The survey results will then be used to identify the location, type, condition, and quantity of ACMs in the building, and a risk assessment of their potential to release asbestos fibers.

There are three types of asbestos surveys:

1. Management Surveys - This type of survey is required to identify ACMs that are likely to be damaged or disturbed during normal occupancy or maintenance activities. The survey aims to identify the location, extent, and condition of ACMs so that they can be managed or removed safely to prevent or minimize exposure to asbestos.

2. Refurbishment/Demolition Surveys - This type of survey is required when a building is undergoing major refurbishment or demolition, and all ACMs must be identified and safely removed before any work can commence. The survey aims to locate all ACMs in the building and assess their condition and accessibility so that appropriate measures can be taken to remove them safely.

3. Type 3 Surveys - This type of survey is a combination of the management and refurbishment/demolition surveys. It aims to identify and assess the condition of ACMs that may be disturbed during planned or unplanned maintenance, repair, or other general activities.
