Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used widely in the construction industry for its insulating and fire-resistant properties. Until the 1980s, asbestos was commonly used in the UK in the construction of homes, offices, schools and factories. Asbestos is a dangerous material and exposure to it can cause many serious health problems, such as lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are still present in many buildings in the UK, particularly those built before the 1990s. It is therefore essential that an asbestos survey is conducted before any refurbishment or demolition work is carried out.
