Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in the construction of buildings in the UK until its ban in 1999. Asbestos was considered a miracle material in the past due to its fire-resistant, insulating and durability properties. However, it was later discovered that asbestos fibres, when disturbed, can become airborne and inhaled by people. Over time, this can cause serious health problems, including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer.
