Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring minerals used in a wide variety of commercial and industrial applications due to its desirable physical properties. Its fibers are strong, flexible, heat-resistant, and virtually impermeable, making it especially useful as an insulator or fire retardant. However, prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to serious respiratory illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, even years after initial exposure.

Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can still be found in homes and buildings constructed or renovated before the 1980s. In the UK, there is a legal responsibility to ensure that asbestos and ACMs are properly handled, maintained, or removed in line with Health & Safety Executive (HSE) regulations.
