Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was commonly used in construction materials such as insulation, floor tiles, cement, roofing, and many more. The material was popularly used because of its heat-resistant, fireproof, and insulation properties.

However, asbestos can be harmful to humans when inhaled. Asbestos fibers are microscopic, and when they are released into the air, they can easily be inhaled. When this happens, the tiny fibers get stuck in the lungs, which can lead to serious health issues such as lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

The consumption of asbestos peaked during the 1950s and 1960s in the UK. For this reason, many buildings that were constructed during this period may contain asbestos. In fact, it is estimated that more than 50% of all homes in the UK built before 1999 have asbestos-containing materials.
