Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which was widely used in the UK for insulation, fireproofing and other construction purposes, until it was banned in 1999. As a result, many buildings constructed or refurbished before this date may contain asbestos in some form.

Asbestos is made up of fibres which, when airborne, can pose a serious health risk if inhaled. Exposure to asbestos can lead to serious lung diseases such as lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis, which can take many years to develop.
