Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was used extensively in building materials throughout the UK until its ban in 1999. While asbestos is a highly effective insulation material, its fibres can be released into the air when it is disturbed, such as during demolition, renovation or repair work.

Exposure to these airborne asbestos fibres can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. These diseases can take years, even decades, to develop, but once they do, they can be fatal.
