Because of these properties, it was a popular material used in construction for pipe insulation, fireproofing, roofing, and many other applications.

However, asbestos is also a hazardous substance that poses severe health risks to humans. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can get lodged in the lungs and cause a range of health problems, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

That is why the UK government banned the use of asbestos in 1999. Nevertheless, many buildings constructed before the ban still contain asbestos, which requires careful handling and disposal to avoid health risks.
